Optimal barn ventilation

Why is good barn ventilation so important? A good barn climate is of great importance for keeping your livestock healthy and productive. This is especially important at warm temperatures. The barn climate also plays a major role in maintaining the milk production of dairy cattle. From 22 degrees a cow eats less and milk production decreases as a result. This can be prevented with a good ventilation system. Livestock from too much heat stress can also suffer from fertility problems, a reduced resistance and a greater chance of inflammation. With a good ventilation system, refreshing air is blown around the cattle. As a result, the perceived temperature in the barn decreases and your livestock performs optimally.

Cross ventilation or longitudinal ventilation?

With longitudinal ventilation, the fans are mounted in the end wall and the air inlets in the side walls. By opening or closing the speed of fans and the air inlets further, a wide range of air exchange is possible. The airflow in the longitudinal direction of the cubicles ensures better cooling. It is about the air speed at the animal, not about the capacity of the fan. In warm weather, an air speed of 2.5m/sec is optimal. With cross ventilation, the fans are placed in a side wall. The inlets are in the opposite side wall. Because the distance from inlet to fan is short, it is possible to change the air in a barn at a very low speed. This system is suitable for moving both little and a lot of air. Compared to longitudinal ventilation, cross ventilation provides fresher air and better air quality, with fewer temperature differences.
